Methichi Amboli (मेथीची आंबोळी)
Fragrant Flour: Methi Amboli is such a staple at my house that when nothing comes to mind for breakfast lunch or dinner Amboli is a saviour
Every time we came home from long travels a quick fix of Amboli or Kulith pithla Bhat helped to ease the stress. In Konkan, when means were limited to such extent that even Wheat poli (chapati) was considered as a delicacy or vegetables which are on top of our list were a rarity then. I am talking about 50-60 years back when the brighter population was migrating to Mumbai Pune in the search of better opportunities, the mothers were assembling snack packs which would last at least for few days.
My Ajoba went to Alibaug for his further education with a small pouch of Amboli pith, Metkut and Pohe, he always remembered the day when it all got over and how he cried in the memory of his beloved mother, then the Amboli pouch which was wrapped in a piece of his mother’s saree was scented with Methi fragrance gave him a feel of being close to her. Ever since we called Amboli Flour “Sugandhi Pith” or “Fragrant Flour”!!!
Amboli does a perfect job of bridging the gap when I remember Aaji, Anna and Aai
